Cookie: 2782764 PC104 vs RISC for COTS Projects
"COTS" technology for embedded systems once meant PC technology, repackaged as PC104 or PCI for alternate service. But now you can have purpsoe-build systems, emplying the latest low power RISC COTS chips.

PC104 and PC Bus Standards Compared to Single Board Design

There was a time when "COTS" technology meant PC technology, repackaged for alternate service. Things have changed. Now more and more is being packed on the chip, serial communication, chip to chip has outstripped backplanes for data speed, plus low power, sleep mode and instant on is required for many applications. Clearly, there are no "PC104" PDA's or Cell phones. How do older, bus based technologies stack up against RISC, Single-Board Computers??

Low Power

RISC has lower power than CISC

About 1W.  Processors run “cool” to the touch… no heat output and <500mW.  Power partitioning on components adds “smart power” usage.

Typically 8-15W.  No smart power systems on-board.

Driver development

Critical for a system to become “application-ready”.  Most embedded products don’t get to market due to the complex engineering before the application is complete

Drivers and OS port are completed under the same roof as the hardware.  Provides for completely integrated system.

Typically driver development is handled by a third party.

Expandability

Serial is replacing parallel drives… serial has more flexibility and increased speed

Serial, USB, CAN2.0b, Ethernet, PCMCIA and C.F, interface, etc. ALL ON ONE BOARD

Expandable with increased cards (and increased cost)

Time to market

Driven by how a company gets their exact design requirements completed on-time

25+ designs in house… company tooled to reconfigure existing designs quickly and successfully

Exact match difficult to find.

Ruggedized

Critical in many applications for temperature, EMI, shock & vibe

Industrial standard

Non-ruggedized

Graphics

Many MMI (man-machine interface) requires specific look, feel

Graphics included in the processor

Separate graphics chip required.
