Alpha Units In Afghanistan- Jan, 2002
Only
8 weeks from start of work, fully functional prototypes in SLA housings
were taken to Afghanistan to develop practical phrase libraries
and record native Pashto, Dhari, and Urdu speakers. The unit has
three times the battery capacity as the equivalent Pocket PC to
allow operation all day, away from power.
These are Air Force security personal, they travel with the plane and never know what language they will need the next day. These guards have special vocabulary demands as well. The black device is a separate amplifier/speaker system used in high-noise environment like the bay of this transport jet.
