Low Power design also helps performance at high temperatures

Why use RISC instead of x86 CISC?

RISC StrongARM™ for Low Power and Severe Service Applications

Get white papers from ADS and CALCE labs about low power and severe service technology here! Industrial temp. -40 to +85degC, EMI, shock & vibe, etc. all in a Low-Power package!

Low power capability is significant for power savings with battery-operated systems and handheld devices, and makes possible operation in extended temperature ranges.

As a reference, x86 single board computers may consume 20 Watts and more. ADS' Graphics Client Plus 4"x6" single board computer system consumes on average 2W (2,000mW) of power in full operation. When in 'sleep mode', the Graphics Client Plus system is rated for less than 2.2 to 2.5 mA, yet can spring into full operation instantly with no 'boot up' time.

Even lower power budgets are available on BitsyPlus which partition sections of the board to power down chips when they are not needed. BitsyX goes beyond this by using Intel's XScale technology to pace the CPU and adjust the voltage according to momentary compute need.
