Linux Embedded Systems Debian Embe4dian Computers

Applied Data offers for download an experimental port of Debian GNU/Linux to the latest Linux variant of the Application Binary Interface (ABI, sometimes called EABI) for the ARM® architecture. The new port enables the use of hardware floating point coprocessors such as the ARM Vector Floating Point (VFP) coprocessor and Cirrus’ Maverick Crunch floating point coprocessor. It also provides a significant boost in floating point performance to ARM systems that do not have a floating point coprocessor.

Current Debian GNU/Linux official and unofficial ports to the ARM architecture use floating point instructions that are emulated in software, which carries a performance penalty.

Applied Data Systems expects that this new port will quickly mature and be integrated into Debian, and plans to work closely with the Debian project to facilitate that. The ABI for the ARM architecture, commonly known as the “EABI”, is a collection of standards, some open and some specific to the ARM architecture, that regulate the inter-operation of binary code, development tools and execution environments.
